About

Aumārire_Harmony

Aumarire_Harmony is a series of four silkscreen artworks on brass by Peata Larkin. Each colour and layer of pigment has been individually laid down, creating depth and energy that embodies one of the four elements — Wai _water, Whenua _earth, Ahi _fire, and Angi _air. The fifth element, Wairua _ether flows through all four pieces in the form of sound waves.

Shapes cut into the brass evoke the cosmos and reflect the interconnectedness of existence, ever-changing with the light.

Each work is alive, activated through the day with shadows cast onto the wall. The imagery draws on the relationship of Rangi and Papa, symbolising the generative space between sky and earth and the harmony that emerges from their connection. The works also reference raranga (weaving), taniko (geometric patterns) and tukutuku weaving traditions, and DNA strands.

Peata Larkin says: “I was inspired to create this series because I believe in the power of art and music to unite communities. Through the elements and the guiding presence of wairua, I wanted to reflect the deep connections between Māori and Pākehā and the shared creative spirit at the heart of Kāhui St David’s. The elements and the cosmos remind me that everything is interconnected. By weaving together Māori narratives and contemporary practice, I hope to create works that speak to a shared sense of belonging and harmony.”

We invite you to order your artwork to enjoy on your walls - and to support this grassroots initiative to keep the doors open of this vital centre for music and the performing arts for all.
