Auckland Chamber Orchestra presents Furniture Music + Silent Movie + Louis Spohr

ACO has teamed up with actor/musician/MD Paul Barrett to guide and distract us through Satie’s Furniture Music.

Paul Barrett has credits in over 140 productions as an actor. Over 40 productions as Musical Director/ Associate MD/ Vocal Coach/ Pianist. Over 1000 Voice Overs for Documentaries, Corporate and Television/ Radio Commercials. 50 books recorded for The Royal New Zealand Foundation Of The Blind.

Then it’s silent movie night! Cinema with live orchestra in a performance of Entr’acte (1924) directed by René Clair with music by Erik Satie. Peter Scholes conducts the ACO in synchronisation with the film. Peter’s silent movie experience includes conducting Buster Keaton’s “The General”, Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights”, Eric von Stroheim’s “The Wedding March” and Hitchcock’s “The Lodger”.

The cast included cameo appearances by Erik Satie, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Jean Börlin (artistic director of the Ballets Suédois), Georges Auric (whose music we perform later in October), and Clair himself.

  • On my feet
    I walked through dense glass
    Pushing over tides
    Slowly waddling
    Like the Laumei*
    The sea it breaks
    Glass shards bouncing off
    my back
    It is protected
By the chant of the ancients
    Rotating
    Levitating
    On the wet rooftops
    Sub-heaven skies

  • 'Moon oil' (2017) written by Joshua Pearson
