Peata Larkin’s artworks glow gold with shimmering light in abstract mark-making which coalesce into form reminiscent of Māori weaving traditions and DNA strands. Fields of colour shift and the perforations in the brass surface throws subtle constellations of patterns onto the wall. Each work in the series has the greens of the earth and blues of the sky. Sound waves representing the Wairua_Ether element flow up from the bottom of each work, and connect all four. The artist’s hand in the individual brush-strokes are transposed through hand-pulled silkscreens in layers are laid onto the brass of the artwork’s surface. Colour refracts and shifts through the day and at night, responsive to its environment and our perspective
Titled Aumārire_Harmony, the artworks are conceived as a quartet (4), and can also be installed as a triptych (3), as a pair (2), or individually (1). The musical title, and sound-wave design elements reflect the artist’s musical inspiration, and her support for keeping the green doors of Kāhui St David’s centre for music open for the community.
Each of the four artworks is also titled after one of the four elements: Wai_Water, Whenua_Earth, Ahi_Fire, Āngi_Air. This reflects the shifting energy and colour ways of each of the artworks.
Each element is connected through green and blue, and each has its own personality and unique qualities.
Peata Larkin says: Through the elements and the guiding presence of wairua, I wanted to reflect the deep connections between Māori and Pākehā and the shared creative spirit at the heart of Kāhui St David’s. The elements and the cosmos remind me that everything is interconnected.”
